Presented from a posterior aspect, the tibia lies medial and the fibula lateral, with the interosseous membrane spanning between their interosseous borders from just distal to the tibial tuberosity region toward the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis. Proximally, the femoral condyles and posterior tibial plateau frame the knee joint, while distally the medial malleolus and lateral malleolus define the ankle mortise. The membrane’s oblique fiber direction can be inferred running predominantly inferolaterally from tibia to fibula, creating a taut partition deep to the posterior compartment.
