Posterior trunk anatomy frames a superimposed liver (hepar, jecur) positioned in the right upper quadrant beneath the right hemidiaphragm, with the posterior surface oriented toward the vertebral column. The caudate lobe sits superior and medial on this posterior aspect, adjacent to the fissure for the ligamentum venosum and immediately anterior to the inferior vena cava groove. Laterally, the right lobe extends toward the posterior axillary line, while the inferior border lies just superior to the costal margin in anatomical position. Obesity is reflected by increased truncal adiposity that can alter surface landmarks. Posterior orientation matters when you need to relate the liver to retroperitoneal structures and to the dorsal thoracoabdominal wall during positioning, imaging, or operative planning.
