Description
Running along the posterolateral thigh, the long head of the biceps femoris is shown as a superficial hamstring belly arising proximally from the ischial tuberosity and coursing inferiorly toward the lateral side of the knee. Medially, its border would abut the semitendinosus and, more deeply, the semimembranosus, while the short head (from the linea aspera) sits lateral and deep in the distal thigh. Distally, the tendon tracks to the head of the fibula, forming the lateral margin of the popliteal fossa and lying lateral to the neurovascular bundle. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this posterior perspective helps clarify why proximal hamstring avulsions typically involve the ischial origin of the long head and semitendinosus, while distal biceps femoris injuries cluster near the musculotendinous junction or fibular insertion in sprinting athletes.
