Description
Positioned on the posterolateral thigh, the long head of the biceps femoris runs from the ischial tuberosity inferiorly toward the lateral side of the knee, forming the lateral contour of the hamstring compartment in this lateral view of an adult male. Proximally it lies posterior to the femur and deep to the gluteal region, then courses distally to approach the fibular head, lateral to the semitendinosus and semimembranosus. At the knee, its tendon sits posterolateral to the joint line, adjacent to the iliotibial tract on the lateral thigh. Clear landmarks. Functionally, the long head is the biarticular hamstring component that extends the hip and flexes the knee, and it contributes to lateral rotation of the tibia when the knee is flexed. That combination makes it a common site of proximal hamstring tendinopathy at the ischial origin and of musculotendinous junction strain during sprinting, where pain localizes posterolaterally rather than at the more medial hamstrings. This lateral perspective also supports teaching of posterolateral knee anatomy, where the biceps femoris tendon is a key reference for the course of the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it wraps around the fibular neck and becomes vulnerable to traction or compression. Course directors can place this plate in lower-limb anatomy and kinesiology modules to contrast the long head with the short head of the biceps femoris and with the quadriceps on the anterior thigh, and editors can pair it with sports medicine content on hamstring injury patterns and return-to-run criteria.
