Description
Posterior cervical anatomy is presented from the back of the head to the upper thoracic midline, with the occipital bone and superior nuchal line forming the superior attachment area for the superficial trapezius and the deeper splenius capitis. Inferiorly, the trapezius converges toward the midline over the spinous processes of the upper cervical vertebrae, while the semispinalis capitis and splenius cervicis occupy the paramedian plane, bridging from the cervical transverse processes toward the skull. Along the craniovertebral junction, the atlanto-occipital region sits deep to these layers, and light blue connective tissue accents suggest the nuchal ligament and tendonous fascial planes that separate muscle compartments. Posterior views like this matter when you need to teach or plan around the layered extensor mechanism that stabilizes the head on the cervical spine, because superficial trapezius pain can mask deeper suboccipital and semispinalis sources of cervicogenic headache after whiplash or prolonged flexion posture.
