Seen from the posterior aspect, the axis (C2, epistropheus) presents a broad vertebral arch formed by paired laminae converging toward the base of the bifid spinous process, with the vertebral foramen enclosed anteriorly by the posterior surface of the vertebral body. Superior articular facets sit posterolateral to the foramen, oriented to receive the atlas, while the transverse processes project laterally and contain the transverse foramina for the vertebral vessels. The dens (odontoid process) rises from the superior surface of the body but remains largely concealed from a straight posterior view by the arch. Clear bony landmarks.
