Description

Rotating through a posterior (dorsal) view of the shoulder girdle, the animation centers on the scapular neck (collum scapulae), the narrowed segment immediately medial to the glenoid cavity and lateral to the scapular body. As the perspective settles, the glenoid rim and infraglenoid tubercle sit lateral, while the spine of the scapula and infraspinous fossa extend medially and inferiorly across the blade. The sequence emphasizes the shallow indentation at the neck as it transitions into the thicker lateral column that supports the humeral head. Orientation at the scapular neck matters when you are teaching glenohumeral mechanics or reviewing traumatic patterns around the lateral scapula. Fractures of the scapular neck and glenoid are uncommon but clinically consequential, often seen after high-energy trauma and assessed in relation to glenopolar angle and potential instability of the shoulder suspensory complex. Motion helps here: by subtly changing viewpoint, the animation clarifies where the neck ends and the glenoid begins, a boundary that can be hard to appreciate on a single still or on overlapping radiographs. Use this clip in upper limb anatomy labs, orthopaedic and emergency medicine teaching on scapular fractures, or as a clean visual insert for textbooks, atlases, and 3D orientation modules that pair with CT (including 3D reconstructions) of the shoulder girdle. Good for quick refresher use. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
