Description

Rotating into an anterior shoulder-girdle perspective, the animation centers on the collum scapulae (neck of the scapula) as it narrows just medial to the lateral angle and glenoid cavity. The subscapular fossa lies anterior and medial, while the coracoid process projects anterosuperiorly and the acromion arcs superiorly toward the clavicular articulation. As the camera tracks across the lateral border, the scapular neck is read in continuity with the glenoid rim that supports the humeral head. Bony relief is kept clean for orientation. Clinically, this is the region implicated in many scapular neck fractures, where displacement can alter glenoid version and destabilize the glenohumeral joint, sometimes with associated traction risk to the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery as they course through the quadrangular space just inferior to the capsule. The animated sweep clarifies how close the neck sits to the glenoid cavity and why small changes in angulation matter for joint congruence, a relationship that is harder to teach from a single static anterior view. It also helps learners distinguish the scapular neck from the surgical neck of the humerus, a common source of exam and reporting errors. Simple anatomy. Common confusion. Use this sequence for gross anatomy labs covering the pectoral girdle, radiology teaching that correlates scapular fractures with CT reconstructions in the scapular plane, or orthopedic and trauma publications discussing glenoid alignment and fixation landmarks from an anterior approach. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
