Description
Seen from a posterior angle, the radial (lateral) side of the wrist is centered on the radial carpal collateral ligament as it courses from the distal radius, near the radial styloid process, to the lateral carpal row, most often the scaphoid and sometimes blending toward the trapezium. Dorsal aspects of the carpal bones are exposed, with the metacarpals extending distally and the phalanges aligned in the digits; the thumb lies lateral to the index ray in standard anatomical position. Extensor tendons traverse the dorsum of the hand superficial to the carpus, while the ligament sits deeper, spanning the radiocarpal articulation and resisting excessive ulnar deviation. Clear topography. Clinically, this ligament is a key stabilizer on the radial side during load-bearing and deviation, and it is examined when a patient reports radial wrist pain after a fall on an outstretched hand. The same symptom cluster raises concern for scaphoid injury and scapholunate dissociation, so seeing the ligament’s relationship to the scaphoid helps clarify why tenderness at the anatomic snuffbox, painful ulnar deviation, and grip weakness can coexist. For surgeons, the posterior perspective aligns with common dorsal wrist approaches, where protecting extensor compartments while assessing carpal stability matters.
