Description
Posterior to the elbow joint, the distal humerus is shown articulating with the proximal ulna at the trochlear notch, with the radial head positioned laterally against the capitulum. Along the medial side of the joint, the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is emphasized, with oblique posterior-band fibers spanning from the medial epicondyle toward the medial margin of the ulna near the sublime tubercle and adjacent proximal ulna. The joint capsule is rendered as a fibrous envelope around the articulation, and the relationship of the UCL to the posteromedial ulnohumeral compartment is kept clear. From a teaching and operative planning standpoint, a posterior perspective helps isolate the posterior band of the UCL, the portion that becomes more engaged with increasing elbow flexion and is implicated in posteromedial rotatory and valgus instability. This is the anatomy behind valgus overload injuries in overhead throwers, where UCL attenuation or tearing can coexist with posteromedial olecranon osteophytes and chondral wear from repetitive impingement. Clear medial epicondyle and proximal ulna landmarks also support discussions of UCL reconstruction, including tunnel placement and the need to respect the nearby ulnar nerve as it courses posterior to the medial epicondyle. Orthopaedic and sports medicine lectures on elbow instability, cadaver-lab manuals for UCL reconstruction, and radiology teaching files correlating the UCL bands with MRI planes all benefit from this clean posterior layout.
