Description
Prominent in posterior aspect, the scapula sits on the upper thoracic wall with its vertebral (medial) border oriented toward the midline and its lateral angle expanding toward the glenohumeral region. A stout scapular spine crosses the dorsal surface obliquely from medial to lateral, separating the supraspinous fossa superiorly from the infraspinous fossa inferiorly, before widening into the acromion at the superolateral corner. Along the superior border, the base of the coracoid process is implied anteriorly, while the glenoid cavity lies laterally at the neck where the humerus would articulate. Key landmarks are clear. Posterior scapular anatomy matters because so many clinical decisions hinge on these bony reference points: the acromion and scapular spine guide arthroscopic portal placement and orient surgeons during rotator cuff repair, while the glenoid rim and neck provide context for Bankart lesions and posterior shoulder instability. Fracture patterns also map cleanly onto this view, including scapular body fractures crossing the infraspinous fossa and acromial or spine fractures that can alter subacromial clearance and shoulder mechanics. For teaching, the fossae and borders help students connect origin sites of supraspinatus and infraspinatus to their tendons as they pass laterally toward the greater tubercle. Use this plate in gross anatomy lab manuals, orthopedic and sports medicine teaching files, or any atlas section covering the shoulder girdle and scapulothoracic motion. It also fits well in radiology education when paired with scapular Y view and axillary lateral concepts, where the spine and acromion form recognizable landmarks for dislocation assessment.
