Description
Running longitudinally along the posterior thoracic spine, the spinalis thoracis forms the medial column of the erector spinae, hugging the spinous processes from the upper lumbar region toward the mid to upper thorax. Medial to it lies the line of thoracic spinous processes, while laterally the erector spinae mass grades into longissimus thoracis and, farther out, iliocostalis; together they create paired muscle columns flanking the vertebral column. The thoracic cage frames this region, with ribs sweeping laterally from the vertebrae, and the scapulae sitting posterolaterally over the upper ribs with the spine of the scapula oriented transversely.
