Description
Posteriorly oriented ventricular anatomy is emphasized, with the paired lateral ventricles traced into their posterior (occipital) horns as they taper within the occipital lobes. The ventricular cavities sit deep to the cerebral cortex, separated from the cortical gyri and sulci by the surrounding cerebral white matter, with the posterior horns extending posteriorly and laterally from the atrium (trigone) region. Medially, the bodies of the ventricles relate to midline structures around the septum pellucidum and corpus callosum, while inferior relationships shift toward the temporal horns and adjacent deep nuclei even if they are not the focus. Cerebrospinal fluid is implied by the ventricular space itself. A clean posterior reference. That tapering contour matters when you are teaching normal ventricular morphology versus distortion from pathology. Posterior horn enlargement is a common pattern in hydrocephalus, and asymmetric occipital horn size can be a clue to ex vacuo ventriculomegaly from occipital or parietal volume loss rather than obstruction.
