Description
Seen from a superior, intracranial vantage, the lateral orbitofrontal artery courses along the inferior surface of the frontal lobe toward the orbital gyri, arising as a cortical branch from the anterior cerebral artery near the anterior part of the circle of Willis. Medial to it, the paired anterior cerebral arteries approach the anterior communicating artery, while the internal carotid arteries lie more posterolateral at the skull base before giving rise to the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Blue venous channels track more superficially, converging toward larger dural venous pathways along the cranial vault, with the orbital cavities and nasal cavity providing fixed bony landmarks anteriorly. Orientation is clean. Branch angles and territories are easy to read. For neurovascular teaching, this artery matters because orbitofrontal cortical branches sit at the junction between anterior cerebral artery territory and the basal frontal region often affected by anterior communicating artery aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage. A superior intracranial view also mirrors what you assess when correlating angiographic runs with basal frontal infarcts, where subtle ACA branch compromise can present with executive and behavioral changes rather than dense motor deficits.
