Description
Ventricular anatomy is centered in this superior view of the cerebral ventricular system, with the paired lateral ventricles flanking the midline third ventricle. Each lateral ventricle is identifiable by its anterior (frontal) horn anteriorly, the body coursing posteriorly, and the posterior (occipital) and inferior (temporal) horns extending posterolaterally and inferolaterally within the hemispheres. Medially, the septum pellucidum region forms the boundary between the lateral ventricles, while the third ventricle lies inferior to the fornix and between the thalami, with the paired foramina of Monro linking the third ventricle to the anteromedial portions of the lateral ventricles. Boundaries matter. Ventricular caliber and symmetry are a daily clinical read, and this top-down relationship between the lateral ventricles and third ventricle is the reference pattern for distinguishing hydrocephalus from ex vacuo ventriculomegaly in cerebral atrophy.
