Description
Seen from a superior aspect, the calcaneus fills the frame with the sustentaculum tali projecting medially as a horizontal shelf from the calcaneal body. The sequence tracks across its smooth superior articular surface for the middle talar facet, oriented to receive the talus just anterior to the posterior calcaneal facet. Subtle changes in angle bring the sulcus calcanei into view lateral to the sustentaculum, defining the inferior boundary of the sinus tarsi and aligning with the talar sulcus to form the tarsal canal. Medial contours of the heel bone remain the dominant landmark. That middle facet is the quiet workhorse of the subtalar complex. It is where abnormal contact mechanics show up in adult acquired flatfoot deformity, with posterior tibial tendon dysfunction allowing hindfoot valgus that alters loading across the sustentaculum and the talocalcaneal interosseous region. Motion-based viewing helps you teach why the sustentaculum is more than a bony shelf, its relationship to the talus shifts with inversion and eversion, and the viewer can appreciate how facet orientation and the adjacent sulcus guide subtalar joint kinematics. A small surface. Big consequences. Use this animation in gross anatomy and lower-limb musculoskeletal modules when introducing the subtalar joint, or in podiatry and orthopedic teaching materials discussing sinus tarsi syndrome, subtalar arthritis, and hindfoot alignment on CT. It also supports surgical education on medial subtalar approaches and calcaneal osteotomy planning by clarifying the medial calcaneal landmark that surgeons palpate and protect.
