Description
Sphenoid limbus forms a transverse bony ridge at the junction of the planum sphenoidale anteriorly and the sella turcica posteriorly, seen here from a superior orientation across the midline of the cranial base. Immediately posterior to the limbus lies the hypophyseal fossa of the sella, while the planum sphenoidale extends forward toward the ethmoidal region as the flat roof over the sphenoid sinus. Laterally, the limbus blends into the sphenoid body near the roots of the lesser wings, in the same neighborhood as the chiasmatic sulcus and the medial margins of the optic canals. Small changes in relief matter. Surgeons and radiologists use this ridge as a fixed osseous landmark when localizing lesions around the tuberculum sellae and planum sphenoidale, where meningiomas commonly extend to compress the optic chiasm and invade the optic canal.
