Description
Sphenoid limbus (limbus sphenoidalis) forms the sharp anterior margin of the sulcus chiasmatis on the superior surface of the sphenoid body, and this anterior view situates it immediately posterior to the planum sphenoidale. Medially, the limbus spans between the paired optic canals, while laterally it transitions toward the roots of the lesser wings and the region of the anterior clinoid processes. Posterior to the limbus, the chiasmatic groove leads back toward the tuberculum sellae and the sella turcica, establishing the bony boundary between the anterior cranial fossa floor and the sellar region. Orientation is unambiguous. Neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists use the limbus as a fixed bony landmark for the prechiasmatic and sellar corridor because it marks where the optic chiasm rests relative to the sphenoid body, and small differences in sulcus depth or canal position can influence decompression strategy. The fixed anterior perspective helps you read the left-right symmetry of the optic canals and appreciate how close the chiasmatic groove lies to the tuberculum sellae, a relationship that matters in transsphenoidal approaches to pituitary adenoma, tuberculum sellae meningioma, and in skull base trauma where fractures can propagate into the optic canal. Fine bony edges and shadowing also make the limbus’ “knife-edge” profile easy to distinguish from the smoother planum sphenoidale.
