Description
Centered in a superior (cranial) view, the T1 vertebra presents an oval vertebral body anteriorly and a nearly circular vertebral foramen posterior to it, framed by the pedicles and laminae. From the vertebral arch, transverse processes project laterally, while the superior articular facets sit posterolaterally and face to receive the inferior articular facets of C7. Posterior elements converge toward the base of the spinous process, which arises in the midline. A junctional vertebra, T1 carries thoracic traits while still echoing cervical proportions. T1 matters because it marks the cervicothoracic transition where biomechanics, neuroanatomy, and surface landmarks converge. The vertebral foramen at this level transmits the spinal cord as it approaches the lower cervical enlargement, and the pedicles define the bony corridor relevant to thoracic pedicle screw placement.
