Description

Acremonium is rendered in microscopic view with slender, septate hyphae coursing across the field and giving rise to upright, single conidiophores that remain largely unbranched. At the distal ends, conidiogenous cells are suggested by clustered, pale oval propagules, with spores accumulating most densely at the apical tips and then dispersing into the surrounding medium. Hyphal elements run in multiple directions across a textured substrate, while the reproductive structures stand more perpendicular to the plane of growth. False color separates hyphae, spores, and background cleanly. For teaching and diagnostic context, Acremonium is often discussed among hyaline hyphomycetes, where the key exercise is correlating microscopic morphology with culture and clinical presentation. That distinction matters because Acremonium can be an environmental saprobe and a laboratory contaminant, yet it also appears as an opportunist in keratitis, onychomycosis, and occasionally deep infection in immunocompromised hosts.
