Description

Alternaria conidia and their supporting conidiophores occupy the field at high magnification, with darkly pigmented, septate spores aligned in chains along the distal portions of the reproductive hyphae. Individual conidia appear banded by transverse septa and may show longitudinal septation, producing the muriform pattern typical of many ascomycete molds. Proximally, the conidiophore blends into the vegetative hyphal network, while the distal conidial chain projects outward into the surrounding substrate, emphasizing the apical-to-basal progression of spore maturation. Pigment (melanin) within the conidial wall is the dominant visual feature. Recognition of Alternaria cellular architecture matters because these conidia are a common target in direct microscopy from environmental samples and can be confused with other dematiaceous fungi when septation and chaining are not clearly appreciated. The muriform, often beaked conidium, produced as a chain of dry spores, correlates with efficient airborne dispersal and helps explain why Alternaria is frequently implicated in allergic rhinitis and asthma exacerbations, and occasionally in keratitis or cutaneous infection after traumatic inoculation.
