Description

Arising at the junction of the superior border and medial border of the scapula, the superior angle forms a blunt bony corner that sits posterolateral on the thoracic wall, deep to trapezius and adjacent to the levator scapulae insertion. Over the course of the animation, the scapula is oriented in anatomical position and then rotated to clarify how the superior angle relates to the scapular spine posteriorly, the supraspinous fossa laterally, and the superior border leading toward the coracoid process. Medial and lateral relationships are reinforced as the bone sweeps from the vertebral (medial) border toward the glenoid region, keeping the superior angle as the constant landmark. Bony contours, including the medial border inferior to the angle and the superior border anterior to it, remain in view as the perspective shifts. For surface anatomy and palpation, the superior angle is a reliable reference point for scapular position, and its level shifts with scapular elevation, depression, and upward rotation. Levator scapulae dysfunction and myofascial trigger points often localize near the superomedial scapular region, and the animation helps tie that symptom map to the underlying bone and muscle attachment rather than to an abstract “shoulder blade” area. Seeing the scapula rotate in sequence makes it easier to understand why scapular dyskinesis can change the apparent prominence of the medial border and alter cervical and upper thoracic mechanics. Use this asset in gross anatomy labs, kinesiology modules on scapulothoracic motion, and orthopedic or physical therapy teaching on scapular landmarks for examination and manual therapy. It also fits well in medical publishing figures that need a clean bony reference for labeling surrounding muscles, bursae, or regional pain patterns. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
