Sagittal sectioning opens the male kidney to reveal the renal cortex as a peripheral band surrounding the deeper renal medulla, where multiple renal pyramids form triangular wedges with their bases directed toward the corticomedullary junction and their apices pointing medially into the renal sinus. Between adjacent pyramids, cortical tissue extends inward as renal columns, separating the striated medullary bundles. Collecting ducts and loops of Henle converge toward each papilla, which empties into a minor calyx, then major calyces, and on to the funnel-shaped renal pelvis that continues inferiorly as the ureter. Red arterial branches and blue venous channels track from the hilum toward the cortex, aligning with the nephron’s glomeruli and peritubular microcirculation. This cut is the one you want when teaching how urine actually leaves the parenchyma: flow along collecting ducts to the papillary tip, then into the calyceal system, a pathway directly implicated in papillary necrosis (classically with analgesic nephropathy, diabetes mellitus, or sickle cell disease) where sloughed papillae can obstruct the ureteropelvic junction. The clear corticomedullary boundary also supports discussions of medullary ischemia and concentrating defects, since the inner medulla operates at low oxygen tension and depends on the vasa recta countercurrent exchange to preserve the osmotic gradient.
