Description
Centered on the anterior thigh, the rectus femoris is rendered superficially while the vastus intermedius lies deep against the anterior and lateral surfaces of the femoral shaft, continuing distally toward the quadriceps tendon. Medial and lateral to this deep belly, the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis frame the quadriceps compartment as they converge toward the patella and tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament. Inferiorly, the patella sits anterior to the distal femur at the knee joint, with the tibia medial and the fibula lateral in the leg, and the extensor tendons track across the ankle into the dorsum of the foot.
