Description
Sectioned in an anterior hemi-view, the left face and cervical region expose the superficial and deep facial musculature, the paranasal sinus cavities, and the nasal passages within the cranium. Around the orbit, the orbicularis oculi sits anterior to the orbital septum region, while the zygomaticus muscles run inferolaterally toward the angle of the mouth, adjacent to the orbicularis oris. Inferiorly, the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process toward the sternum and clavicle, framing the lateral neck where the carotid sheath contents course deep to it, and small portions of the upper pectoral region appear at the cervicothoracic junction. Neurovascular mapping in this orientation matters because the facial nerve branches and the trigeminal sensory territories intersect with the facial artery and vein in predictable planes that guide both diagnosis and intervention. At the infraorbital foramen and along the course of the mental nerve, local anesthetic blocks follow bony landmarks, while surgical approaches for midface trauma or sinus surgery must respect the relationship of the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus to the orbit and anterior cranial base. Injury patterns are easier to teach here. So are iatrogenic risks.
