Description
Anterior shoulder anatomy is presented with the proximal humerus seated in the glenoid fossa of the scapula, forming the glenohumeral ball-and-socket joint. Along the inferior margin of the glenoid rim, irregular bony outgrowths (osteophytes, bone spurs) project medially and inferiorly toward the axillary recess of the joint capsule. The humeral head lies lateral to the scapular neck, with portions of the thoracic cage faintly visible posterior to the scapula as a background landmark. Periarticular erythema surrounds the joint line, consistent with an inflammatory pain generator in the capsule, synovium, or adjacent bursa. Inferior glenoid osteophytes are a common radiographic and arthroscopic finding in glenohumeral osteoarthritis, where cartilage loss and capsular tightness drive asymmetric wear and spur formation at the rim. These spurs can mechanically limit abduction and external rotation, and they often correlate with anterior shoulder pain and stiffness that fails simple rotator cuff focused treatment. During arthroplasty planning or arthroscopic debridement, the inferior glenoid rim is a key region, both because osteophytes distort the native glenoid contour and because work in the inferior capsule approaches the neighborhood of the axillary nerve. Small anatomy, big consequences.
