Description
Viewed from an anterior perspective through a translucent dermal layer, the deep part of the masseter occupies the lateral cheek, running inferiorly from the zygomatic arch toward its insertion on the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and the mandibular angle. Superficial facial expression muscles remain visible in the foreground, with the zygomaticus major coursing inferomedially from the zygomatic bone to the modiolus at the oral commissure. Superiorly and posterolaterally, the masseteric region sits adjacent to the temporal fossa territory of the temporalis muscle, a key masticatory partner even when only partly suggested in an anterior facial view. An anterior look at the deep masseter helps clarify why jaw-closing strength is not just a function of bulk but of fiber orientation and insertional footprint along the ramus. This is the plane surgeons and injectors think about when planning interventions around the mandibular angle, where masseter hypertrophy, bruxism-related myalgia, and botulinum toxin placement can alter lower-face contour and occlusal loading, and where overmedial injection risks diffusion toward deeper spaces. It also reinforces the relationship between masticatory musculature and the overlying mimic muscles, which can complicate palpation during temporomandibular disorder exams.
