Description
Anteriorly oriented, the forearm is opened to emphasize the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) as the dominant intermediate layer flexor, lying superficial to flexor digitorum profundus and deep to the palmaris longus (when present) and flexor carpi radialis. Proximally, the common flexor origin at the medial epicondyle of the humerus sits medial to the antecubital fossa, while the FDS muscle belly spans the proximal and middle forearm before narrowing into four tendons that pass distally toward the index through little fingers. Radius and ulna frame the muscle mass laterally and medially, with the carpal bones and metacarpals aligned distal to the flexor retinaculum at the wrist. Clear landmarks. FDS anatomy matters because it is the prime flexor of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints and a frequent reference structure during tendon examination: isolating PIP flexion while blocking the distal interphalangeal joint helps distinguish FDS from flexor digitorum profundus function after laceration. In carpal tunnel syndrome, the FDS tendons share the confined tunnel with the median nerve, and tenosynovitis around these tendons can worsen median neuropathy symptoms and complicate steroid injection or surgical release planning.
