Description
From an anterior (palmar) perspective, the flexor digitorum superficialis is shown giving rise to four long tendons that pass distally across the volar wrist and into the palm toward digits II to V. Proximally, the muscle belly lies superficial to the flexor digitorum profundus, and its tendons align anterior to the metacarpals and phalanges, constrained by the flexor retinaculum and the fibrous digital sheaths. Along each finger, the superficialis tendon divides into two slips to allow the flexor digitorum profundus tendon to continue distally, a relationship that becomes most obvious around the proximal phalanx and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. Bones of the hand provide the white structural reference, with palmar fascia and ligamentous bands stabilizing the soft tissues. Clinically, this view matters when you need to separate tendon sources of finger flexion and localize injury. Flexor digitorum superficialis is the prime flexor of the PIP joints, so an isolated PIP flexion test helps distinguish FDS integrity from flexor digitorum profundus function after laceration in zone II, the classic no man’s land where adhesions and pulley disruption complicate repair. The course under the flexor retinaculum also ties the superficialis tendons to carpal tunnel anatomy, relevant when tenosynovitis increases tunnel content and contributes to median nerve symptoms.
