Description
Running deep on the anterior forearm and into the palm, the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) belly gives rise to four long tendons that pass distal to the flexor digitorum superficialis and enter the digital fibrous sheaths. Each tendon courses centrally along the palmar aspect of digits II to V, traverses the split of the superficialis at Camper’s chiasm, and inserts on the bases of the distal phalanges to flex the distal interphalangeal joints. Superficial to these tendons lie the palmar fascia and the flexor retinaculum at the carpal tunnel, while the metacarpals and phalanges form the osseous framework deep and distal. Alongside the flexors, the common digital vessels and branches of the superficial and deep palmar arches are typically shown in close relation within the palm. Anterior emphasis on FDP matters because it is the primary driver of isolated DIP flexion, and its tendon gliding depends on intact pulleys (A2 and A4 in particular) within the digital sheath. This is the view you want when teaching or planning around jersey finger (FDP avulsion from the distal phalanx), where retraction and vincular blood supply influence timing and technique of repair. It also supports discussions of median nerve compression in carpal tunnel syndrome, since the FDP tendons occupy space and contribute to tenosynovitis-related crowding beneath the flexor retinaculum. Small anatomy, big consequences.
