Description
Centered within the anterior abdomen, the large intestine is traced from the right iliac fossa cecum and proximal ascending colon up toward the right colic (hepatic) flexure, then across as the transverse colon to the left colic (splenic) flexure. From there, the descending colon courses inferiorly along the left flank toward the sigmoid colon, which curves medially into the pelvis before continuing as the rectum. Abdominal wall and body contour are rendered on an obese adult Black male figure, with the bowel overlaid to clarify surface projection. Orientation is unmistakable. Obesity changes how the colon sits and how it is approached clinically, because increased visceral fat and a heavier mesocolon can accentuate redundancy of the sigmoid and transverse colon and alter the relationship of bowel to anterior abdominal landmarks. That matters in colonoscopy, where looping and difficult cecal intubation are more common, and in abdominal surgery where access to the right colon and mobilization along the white line of Toldt can be technically constrained. Clear recognition of the cecum and ascending colon on an anterior view also supports localization of appendiceal and right lower quadrant pathology, even when external habitus obscures palpation.
