Description
Seen from an anterior perspective in an obese adult male, the large intestine is traced from the right iliac fossa, where the cecum and appendiceal region sit inferiorly, up the ascending colon along the right flank to the hepatic flexure beneath the right costal margin. The transverse colon then drapes across the upper abdomen, often hanging inferiorly in a more pendulous loop before turning at the splenic flexure in the left upper quadrant. Descending colon courses inferiorly along the left lateral abdomen toward the left iliac fossa, continuing as the sigmoid colon in the lower left abdomen and pelvis. Mesenteric fat and abdominal wall contour are suggested by the body habitus. Orientation is clear. For teaching, this front-on layout helps anchor quadrants and surface anatomy you reference during abdominal exam and colonoscopy. Obesity can shift the apparent position of the transverse colon and flexures, which matters when correlating pain location, interpreting CT scout images, or planning port placement for laparoscopic colectomy where mobilization of the hepatic or splenic flexure can be the limiting step. The depiction also supports discussion of right-sided versus left-sided colonic pathology, from cecal volvulus patterns to diverticular disease predominance in the sigmoid.
