Description
Centered within the abdominopelvic cavity, the large intestine is isolated and highlighted through a semi transparent anterior body wall in an elderly white male standing in anatomical position. The cecum occupies the right lower quadrant, continuing superiorly as the ascending colon along the right lateral abdomen to the hepatic flexure beneath the inferior margin of the liver. From there, the transverse colon courses medially and leftward across the upper abdomen toward the splenic flexure, with the haustral contour and overall colic frame readable against the external torso landmarks. External surface anatomy remains visible, so the bowel can be related to the costal margin superiorly and the anterior superior iliac spines inferiorly. Age related anatomy matters in the colon. Diverticulosis increases with advancing age, most often in the sigmoid but also encountered throughout the colon, and a clear appreciation of colonic segment location helps clinicians correlate left lower quadrant pain patterns and CT findings with the likely affected segment. Colonoscopy orientation also depends on recognizing the turns at the hepatic and splenic flexures, common points of looping and patient discomfort, and the depiction supports teaching of why right sided versus left sided lesions can present differently (for example, occult bleeding and anemia with proximal tumors). Geriatrics and general anatomy courses can use this figure to introduce the large intestine in situ while keeping body habitus and external landmarks in frame for palpation based teaching. It also suits patient education handouts and gastroenterology or colorectal surgery materials discussing colorectal cancer screening, diverticular disease, or the general map of abdominal pain localization.
