Description
Anteriorly, the inferior lateral genicular artery branches from the popliteal artery at the level of the knee, then courses laterally and slightly inferiorly, wrapping beneath the lateral tibial condyle toward the anterolateral aspect of the joint. Its looping trajectory sits deep to the lateral collateral ligament region and adjacent to the fibular head area, where it contributes to the periarticular genicular anastomosis. Red arterial channels are contrasted with accompanying blue venous pathways that track in parallel across the anterior knee and proximal leg. Small arteriolar offshoots radiate toward the capsule, synovium, and periosteum. A tight vascular ring. Surgical and sports medicine work around the lateral knee benefits from a clean read of this vessel’s position. During lateral meniscus repair, tibial tunnel drilling, or anterolateral approaches, the inferior lateral genicular artery can be a source of brisk bleeding if encountered near the anterolateral tibial plateau, and its branches also intersect the territory discussed in anterolateral ligament and iliotibial band procedures.
