Description
Arising deep to the lower face and anterior neck soft tissues, the jugular trunk is traced as an efferent lymphatic channel formed by converging deep cervical lymph nodes along the internal jugular vein. The vessel runs inferiorly in the carotid sheath region, medial to the sternocleidomastoid and lateral to the larynx and pharynx, then courses toward the venous angle near the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. Superficial and infrahyoid muscles frame the field, while facial and cervical nerves branch across the submandibular and anterior cervical triangles. Bones of the mandible and clavicular region provide fixed landmarks. Attention to the jugular lymphatic pathway matters because it is the principal outflow for lymph from much of the head and neck, and it is frequently discussed when teaching nodal levels and metastatic spread from oral cavity, pharyngeal, laryngeal, and thyroid primaries. This anterior perspective supports procedural thinking: during functional neck dissection or sentinel node work, surgeons follow the internal jugular chain and must respect adjacent cranial nerves and the carotid sheath contents while preserving lymphatic continuity. Chyle leak is the feared complication on the left when the jugular trunk joins, or lies near, the thoracic duct at the venous angle. Small vessel, big problem.
