Description
Oriented in standard anatomical position, the semitransparent anterior body wall reveals the pancreas lying transversely across the upper abdomen, posterior to the stomach and anterior to the vertebral column. Medially, the pancreatic head sits within the C-shaped duodenum, while the neck crosses anterior to the formation of the portal vein and the body extends leftward toward the splenic hilum, tapering into the tail. A main pancreatic duct courses from tail to head, with the expected confluence with the bile duct near the major duodenal papilla. Small acini are implied as the exocrine parenchyma that feeds the ductal system. Clear midline-to-left upper quadrant orientation. For teaching and clinical correlation, an anterior perspective helps anchor common pain patterns and procedural pathways even though much of the gland is retroperitoneal. Pancreatitis often tracks along peripancreatic fascial planes and can involve the lesser sac, and the relationship of the head to the duodenum frames why a pancreatic head mass can obstruct the distal common bile duct and present with painless jaundice. Surgeons and endoscopists also think in these landmarks when planning a pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple) or positioning for ERCP cannulation at the ampulla.
