Description
Arising from the right ventricle, the pulmonary trunk ascends anterior to the left atrium and bifurcates inferior to the aortic arch into the right and left pulmonary arteries, which course laterally toward their respective hila. From an anterior perspective, the right pulmonary artery passes toward the right lung hilum and gives off lobar and segmental branches that distribute alongside the bronchial tree, while the left pulmonary artery angles leftward, superior to the left main bronchus at the hilum. Semi-transparent lung parenchyma allows the bronchial branching pattern to remain visible, with the trachea descending in the midline and dividing into right and left main bronchi just inferior to the carina. Orientation is clear. Clinically, this frontal arrangement is the one you mentally map during CT pulmonary angiography when tracing contrast opacification from the main pulmonary artery into lobar and segmental branches. Acute pulmonary emboli most often lodge at the bifurcation (saddle embolus) or in segmental arteries, and the anterior view helps correlate filling defects with downstream perfusion abnormalities. The spatial relationship of pulmonary arteries to the bronchi at the hilum also matters when teaching the RALS rule (right pulmonary artery anterior to the bronchus, left pulmonary artery superior), a practical landmark in bronchoscopy and hilar dissection. Educators can drop this plate straight into cardiopulmonary anatomy teaching on pulmonary circulation, airway branching, and ventilation perfusion matching, from first-year gross anatomy to respiratory physiology.
