Description
Prominent in this anterior facial view, the supraorbital artery emerges from the orbit at the supraorbital notch or foramen along the superior orbital margin and then ascends superiorly onto the forehead within the superficial tissues of the frontal region. As it courses superiorly, it travels deep to the frontalis muscle and superficial to the frontal bone periosteum, accompanied by the supraorbital vein and the supraorbital nerve as they fan out toward the scalp. Medially and inferiorly, the angular continuation of the facial artery and vein tracks alongside the nose toward the medial canthus, while laterally the superficial temporal territory begins near the temple. Orbicularis oculi frames the palpebral fissure, and sternocleidomastoid anchors the lateral neck inferiorly. Clean landmarks. For clinicians, this artery matters because it defines a predictable corridor for both hemorrhage control and iatrogenic injury in the periorbital region. Lacerations just superior to the eyebrow can bleed briskly from the supraorbital artery, and repair often requires careful hemostasis without trapping the accompanying supraorbital nerve, a common source of postoperative forehead dysesthesia.
