Description
Oriented in anatomical position from an anterior perspective, the male stomach (gaster, ventriculus) fills the field with the distal esophagus entering superiorly at the cardia and the duodenum exiting inferiorly at the pylorus. Blue venous channels course over the anterior gastric wall along the lesser curvature medially and the greater curvature laterally, converging toward the cardia and the antral region. Proximally, veins around the fundus and body track along the gastric contours; distally, pyloric and prepyloric venules form a tighter network near the gastroduodenal junction. Surface texture suggests the muscularis beneath the serosa. Attention to gastric venous drainage matters because it parallels the arterial supply and defines pathways for both surgical bleeding and portal-systemic collateralization. Left and right gastric veins along the lesser curvature typically drain to the portal vein, while short gastric veins and the left gastro-omental (gastroepiploic) vein route toward the splenic vein, and the right gastro-omental vein commonly joins the superior mesenteric vein. Portal hypertension can dilate these channels at the gastroesophageal junction through anastomoses with esophageal veins, the anatomic substrate for esophageal and gastric varices during upper GI bleeding. A clear anterior map also supports planning for gastrectomy, sleeve gastrectomy, and lymphadenectomy, where venous control along the curvatures and near the pylorus is a frequent step. Bleeding here is unforgiving. Ideal for gross anatomy and GI physiology teaching when students are learning portal venous tributaries, and for surgical textbooks discussing the lesser sac, omenta, and approaches to the gastroesophageal junction and pylorus. Also suited to patient-education materials on portal hypertension, varices, and endoscopic or surgical management of upper GI hemorrhage.
