Description
Running along the anterior compartment of the arm, the paired brachial veins (venae comitantes) flank the brachial artery from the distal arm toward the axilla, forming a tight neurovascular bundle deep to the biceps brachii. Superficial to this course, the biceps belly and tendon sit anteriorly while the triceps brachii occupies the posterior compartment, with the humeral shaft providing the deep osseous landmark. Proximally, the brachial veins converge toward the inferior border of teres major to continue as the axillary vein, while smaller venules and muscular tributaries join along their medial and lateral aspects. Paired veins, one artery. An anterior view is the one clinicians mentally rehearse for brachial artery exposure and for understanding why venipuncture in the arm favors superficial veins rather than these deep comitantes. Their close apposition to the brachial artery explains the practical risk of inadvertent arterial puncture or hematoma when attempting deep access, and it also frames the setting for upper extremity deep venous thrombosis involving the brachial veins, which can present after catheter placement or repetitive overhead activity. Seeing the veins relative to biceps and the humerus also clarifies why compartment swelling or post-traumatic edema can rapidly compromise venous return before arterial flow becomes obviously affected. Use this plate in upper-limb anatomy teaching to distinguish superficial venous patterns from the deep venous system and to reinforce the concept of venae comitantes accompanying major arteries. It also suits vascular surgery and interventional radiology materials discussing arm access, catheter-associated thrombosis, or surgical approaches to the brachial artery in the antecubital fossa and distal arm.
