Description
Running along the medial (ulnar) side of the anterior forearm, the paired ulnar veins (venae comitantes) track proximally with the ulnar artery from the wrist toward the cubital fossa, interlacing with smaller venules that drain the flexor compartment. Superficial to this deep vascular bundle, the flexor carpi ulnaris forms a clear medial boundary, while flexor digitorum superficialis lies more centrally and flexor digitorum profundus sits deeper against the ulna. Distally, the vessel course continues into the palm where the ulnar artery typically contributes to the superficial palmar arch, and venous return parallels that arterial pattern toward the proximal forearm. Orientation matters here because the ulnar veins are the deep venous outflow of the ulnar neurovascular corridor, a region surgeons and proceduralists treat with respect during volar approaches to the wrist and forearm. Penetrating trauma along the medial antebrachium can disrupt these venae comitantes with less obvious external bleeding than a superficial vein injury, yet produce deep compartment hematoma and swelling around the flexor tendons. Small vessels, big consequences. Use this plate in upper limb anatomy teaching to distinguish deep ulnar veins from superficial channels such as the basilic vein and median cubital vein, and in surgical education for tendon repair, ulnar artery exposure, and decompression procedures on the volar forearm.
