Description
Running along the medial (ulnar) side of the anterior forearm, the paired ulnar veins (venae comitantes) closely flank the ulnar artery as they course proximally from the wrist toward the cubital fossa. Superficial to this deep neurovascular bundle, the ulna lies medially and the radius laterally, with the humerus superiorly and the scapula included proximally to anchor the limb in the shoulder girdle. Expect the veins and artery to sit deep to the flexor mass, tracking along the intermuscular planes rather than the subcutaneous surface. Two deep channels. One artery between them. That venae comitantes arrangement matters in practice because the ulnar veins are not a single large conduit but a paired system that communicates through transverse venules, and this anatomy affects both venous return and how the deep system behaves when compressed by fascia or swollen muscle. For forearm lacerations, compartment syndrome, or iatrogenic injury during volar surgical approaches to the ulna, appreciating how tightly the ulnar artery and its companion veins travel together helps predict combined arterial and venous bleeding and guides safe dissection.
