Description

Running along the postero medial forearm, the paired ulnar veins (venae comitantes of the ulnar artery) accompany the ulnar artery deep to the flexor carpi ulnaris, receiving tributaries from the deep palmar venous arch and the volar and dorsal venous networks around the wrist. Proximally, the vessels course superiorly toward the cubital fossa, where the ulnar venae comitantes typically join the radial venae comitantes to form the brachial veins, lying anterior to the triceps tendon and closely related to the brachial artery. Superficial landmarks are often included in this posterior view, with the basilic vein tracking on the medial side of the forearm and arm, and the dorsal venous network of the hand spanning distal to the extensor retinaculum. Posterior orientation matters because it clarifies the separation of superficial and deep venous drainage in the upper limb and the way deep veins mirror their companion arteries, an arrangement that becomes clinically relevant during trauma, flap harvest, and venous repair. Venous outflow in this corridor is also influenced by the surrounding muscle pump, so the relationship of the ulnar veins to flexor carpi ulnaris, the deep flexor compartment, and the interosseous membrane is worth teaching.
