Description
Positioned on the right anterolateral chest wall, the superior thoracic vein courses superficial to the upper pectoralis major near its clavicular head and along the anterior axillary fold. Tributaries from the upper intercostal spaces and adjacent thoracic wall converge as the vessel runs inferior to the clavicle and medial to the deltopectoral region before turning toward the axilla. Nearby venous pathways commonly visible from this anterior presentation include the lateral thoracic vein and superficial veins of the pectoral region that communicate with the axillary vein. Orientation is straightforward: the vessel lies superior to the nipple line, lateral to the sternum, and anterior to the ribs and intercostal muscles. For teaching and procedural planning, this view clarifies where thoracic wall venous drainage approaches the axillary neurovascular corridor. That matters during axillary lymph node dissection and mastectomy, where traction and cautery near the lateral border of pectoralis major can injure small venous channels and contribute to troublesome bleeding. It also supports interpretation of collateral venous enlargement in proximal obstruction, such as axillary or subclavian vein thrombosis related to thoracic outlet syndrome or indwelling venous devices.
