Description
Anterior lower limbs are presented in anatomical position with the os coxae partially included superiorly, then the femur, patellae, tibiae, fibulae, and the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges distally. Overlying the skeleton, the external iliac artery continues as the femoral artery in the proximal thigh, then courses toward the adductor canal before giving rise to the popliteal artery at the level of the knee. From the popliteal bifurcation, the anterior tibial artery passes anteriorly through the proximal interosseous membrane and descends in the anterior compartment on the membrane between tibia (medial) and fibula (lateral), continuing as the dorsalis pedis artery over the dorsum of the foot with distal branches to the toes. Landmarks matter. An anterior depiction like this clarifies a point that gets lost in simplified vascular charts: the anterior tibial vessels leave the posterior compartment early and then track a straight, clinically useful line toward the ankle joint. That course underpins pulse examination of the dorsalis pedis artery and helps explain why anterior compartment syndrome can threaten distal perfusion after tibial fractures or reperfusion injury. It also supports teaching of peripheral arterial disease patterns, where inflow lesions above the knee contrast with tibial-level disease that compromises pedal runoff and wound healing.
