Description
Running from the pelvis into both lower limbs, the common iliac arteries divide into external iliac arteries that pass beneath the inguinal ligament to become the femoral arteries in the anterior thigh. Distally, the femoral artery gives off the profunda femoris and continues through the adductor canal to the popliteal artery at the knee, then bifurcates into anterior tibial and posterior tibial arteries, with the fibular (peroneal) artery arising from the posterior tibial trunk. On the dorsum of the foot, the anterior tibial artery continues as dorsalis pedis, contributing to the dorsal metatarsal arteries. Arteries are rendered in red against an anterior male lower-body silhouette. An anterior perspective matters because it maps the accessible course of the femoral pulse and the transition point at the inguinal ligament, a common landmark for femoral arterial puncture, catheterization, and closure-device placement. The popliteal segment and tibial trifurcation are frequent sites of atherosclerotic occlusive disease, and the continuity between anterior tibial and dorsalis pedis arteries helps explain why a diminished dorsalis pedis pulse can reflect proximal stenosis rather than an isolated pedal problem. Landmarks stay clear. That clarity supports teaching collateral pathways and distal perfusion patterns in peripheral arterial disease.
