Description
Anterior lower-body vascular anatomy is presented with the abdominal aorta descending to its bifurcation into the right and left common iliac arteries, continuing as external iliac arteries beneath the inguinal region and into the femoral arteries along the anteromedial thigh. Distally, the femoral artery courses toward the adductor hiatus to become the popliteal artery posterior to the knee, then divides into the anterior tibial artery (continuing onto the dorsum of the foot as dorsalis pedis) and the posterior tibial artery (passing behind the medial malleolus toward the plantar arterial supply), with the fibular (peroneal) artery running lateral and deep in the leg. Superficial body contours and both upper limbs remain faintly visible for orientation. Clear laterality. This distribution matters because most limb-threatening ischemia declares itself along these named segments, from aortoiliac occlusive disease affecting inflow, to femoropopliteal stenosis causing calf claudication, to tibial disease limiting wound healing in the foot. The course behind the medial malleolus also anchors the classic posterior tibial pulse exam, and the popliteal segment provides context for entrapment syndromes and for endovascular access planning when femoral puncture is contraindicated.
