Description
Oriented in a lateral projection of the male lower leg, the vascular pattern is organized around the tibia medially and the fibula laterally, with the fibular (peroneal) artery running deep along the posterior aspect of the fibula within the lateral compartment. Distally, branches track toward the lateral malleolar region while more anterior vessels course toward the dorsum of the foot, and more posterior channels descend toward the calcaneal territory. Superficially, the great saphenous vein appears as a long longitudinal channel ascending from the medial side of the ankle and leg, remaining anterior to the medial malleolus and then continuing proximally toward the knee. Arteries are rendered in red, veins in blue, clarifying the deep versus superficial planes. Lateral anatomy matters when you are localizing limb perfusion deficits and planning access or bypass options that spare compromised tissue planes, because the fibular artery often remains patent in advanced atherosclerotic disease when the anterior tibial or posterior tibial arteries are occluded.
