Description
Oriented in lateral profile, the distal tibia and fibula frame the ankle mortise superior to the talus and calcaneus, with the tarsals, metatarsals, and toe phalanges aligned distally. Red arterial channels course anterior to the lateral malleolus onto the dorsum of the foot, then continue as dorsal metatarsal arteries that divide into dorsal digital arteries running along the dorsolateral aspects of the toes toward the nail beds. Blue superficial veins track in parallel on the dorsum, forming a visible dorsal venous network with longitudinal drainage proximally into the leg. Bone landmarks stay crisp. Vessels stay readable. Lateral visualization of the dorsal digital arteries matters when you want to correlate surface anatomy with distal perfusion patterns, because the dorsalis pedis artery and its branches become vulnerable at the ankle and along the metatarsals where edema, tight dressings, or external compression can compromise flow. This is also the pathway clinicians interrogate with Doppler when pedal pulses are difficult to palpate, and where ischemic change can first present in peripheral arterial disease or diabetic microangiopathy at the toe tips.
