Description

Arising from the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsum of the male foot, the dorsalis metatarsal arteries course distally within the intermetatarsal spaces, running dorsal to the metatarsal shafts and deep to the dorsal fascia toward the metatarsophalangeal joints. Their branches align with the metatarsals and phalanges, with dorsal digital arteries continuing along the sides of the toes. Tarsal, metatarsal, and phalangeal bones appear in realistic dorsal orientation, and paired superficial veins accompany the arterial pathways in blue. Clear bony landmarks include the cuneiforms and cuboid proximally, metatarsals I to V centrally, and the phalanges distally. Dorsal metatarsal anatomy matters when you are mapping pedal perfusion and planning dorsal approaches to the forefoot. The first dorsal metatarsal artery, in particular, is a key pedicle for local flaps used in forefoot and toe reconstruction, and its course near the first intermetatarsal space helps explain why iatrogenic injury can occur during hallux valgus correction or dorsal bunion procedures. Small-vessel disease from diabetes or thromboangiitis obliterans often declares itself distally, so understanding where these vessels travel relative to the metatarsals supports bedside pulse and Doppler localization and correlates with ischemic toe patterns. It is a tight corridor. Use this illustration for gross anatomy and lower limb dissection teaching, podiatry and orthopedic surgery references on dorsal forefoot incisions, and vascular surgery or wound-care publications discussing angiosomes and toe perfusion. It also suits patient education materials that need a clean dorsal road map of arteries and companion veins against the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges.
